Risk Mitigation: Adapting Coastal and Environmental Sites to Rising Sea Levels

25/02/2025

Risk mitigation requires a deep understanding to adapt coastal and environmental sites to rising sea levels.
Within the MedSeaRise project (MSR), risk analysis plays a central role in bridging local insights with expert knowledge.  Hazards, exposure, and vulnerabilities are assessed using tools like the risk analysis matrix, providing a structured approach to evaluate the potential impacts with knowledge coming from both anthropic and economic local stakeholders.
The combination of scientific data (tides, surges, temperature…), stakeholder input (goods at risk,  time needed to recover after an event…), and community collaboration (external expert knowledge) helps the MSR project identify actions to adapt to marine submersion risks,  storm surges, and coastal erosion, while also identifying ways to mitigate the effects on fragile coastal biodiversity.
🔎 The ongoing case studies, led by project partners, highlight the importance of tailored solutions. These include:
🌳 Improving natural barriers
💧 Enhancing water management systems
♻️ Promoting sustainable practices to reduce vulnerabilities
✨ Through this multi-disciplinary approach, the MedSeaRise project tackles not only the ecological impacts of climate change but also the socio-economic challenges faced by Mediterranean communities.
🌟 Together, we aim to build resilience and a sustainable future for our coasts!
