Final workshop with local stakeholders in Montenegro

21/01/2026

As part of the MedSeaRise project “Support for Adaptation to Mediterranean Sea Level Rise,” a final workshop with local stakeholders in Montenegro took place on Friday, 28 November 2025, at the Institute of Marine Biology in Kotor, University of Montenegro.

During the workshop, participants were introduced to a common methodology developed by institutions from six Mediterranean countries. The event gave local stakeholders the opportunity to explore the final results of a two-year collaboration. The collaboration assessed the impacts of sea level rise by 2100 on human activities, infrastructure, cultural heritage, and biodiversity in the coastal zones of Boka Kotorska. These insights support future coastal planning and climate adaptation efforts.

The research focused on two case studies:
🔹 Anthropogenic impacts in Kotor and Risan, examining effects on ports, marinas, beaches, and infrastructure;
🔹 Ecosystem impacts in the Tivat Saline, analysing how rising sea levels and sea temperatures influence biodiversity and marine habitats.

The workshop brought together representatives from institutions and organisations involved since the beginning of the project, including the Public Enterprise for Coastal Zone Management, the Environmental Protection Agency, and the municipalities of Kotor and Tivat. Scientists from the Institute of Marine Biology and the Maritime Faculty of Kotor (UCG), along with representatives from the economic sector (ports, marinas, and hotels), also participated.

The event showcased the collective achievements of the project partners. From the outset, the project was designed to ensure that scientific results can be easily applied in practice. It demonstrated how a shared methodology supports data-driven decision-making for sustainable coastal development in the years ahead.
